A Glimpse at What You'll Have in Hand

Before the Meeting

  • Request a copy of the draft IEP at least 5 days before the meeting
  • Review your child's current progress reports and evaluations
  • Write down your top 3 concerns and goals for this meeting
  • Prepare your 'All About My Child' one-page summary
  • Confirm who will be attending and their roles
  • Ask if an interpreter is needed and arrange one in advance
  • Gather any outside evaluations or medical documentation
  • Know your right to bring a support person

During the Meeting

  • Take notes — or ask permission to record the meeting
  • Ask for clarification on any term you don't understand
  • Request that each goal be read aloud and explained
  • Ask: 'How will progress on this goal be measured?'
  • Confirm all accommodations are listed in writing
  • Do not feel pressured to sign the IEP on the spot

After the Meeting

  • Review the final IEP document carefully before signing
  • Send a follow-up email summarizing what was agreed
  • File a copy of the signed IEP in your binder
  • Set a calendar reminder for the next progress check
  • Note any concerns in writing within 10 business days
  • Contact your advocate if anything feels unresolved
